Nandotsava

August 31

When Lord Krishna was born, there was great jubilation all around. In Vrindavan, it was declared that a boy was born to Yashoda. Nanda Maharaja’s celebration of this event is referred to as Nandotsav. Nanda Maharaja gave away 200,000 well decorated cows, mountains of grains, clothes, ornaments etc. The brahmanas canted Sanskrit hymns for the good fortune of the child.  All the residents were dressed up very nicely and brought gifts for the new baby. At Nanda Maharaja’s house, all the gopis gave their blessings to Krishna by sprinkling a mix of turmeric powder, oil, water, milk, yogurt. All the cowherd men and boys also joined the celebration by throwing butter at each other.
